Russian Ambassador to the United Nations [UN] Vitaly Churkin warned of a potential ground military attack by Saudi Arabia against Yemen, as he said in an interview on Wednesday.

In an interview with Rossiya-24 television on Wednesday, Churkin said that, "The start of a military operation involving foreign contingents might have absolutely disastrous aftermaths".

"The humanitarian disaster there might be highly aggravated", he added.

Furthermore, he called on the UN Security Council to mediate in Yemen and pave the way for a political solution.

"It’s all very fragile there [in Yemen]. We call for an immediate ceasefire," so that all sides involved in the Yemeni conflict come together and negotiate for a political solution, Churkin said.

"The situation is very serious," he further said, adding that, "It will probably be possible to solve it, including with the help of the UN Security Council."

Saudi Arabia began its US-led military aggression against Yemen on March 26 - without a UN mandate - in a bid to undermine the Houthi Ansarullah movement, and to restore power to fugitive former President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, who is a close ally of Saudi Arabia.
