Yemen Calls UNESCO to Protect Socotra Island

Yemen’s General Authority for Conservation of Historic Places on Sunday called on UNESCO to save and protect Archipelago of Socotra Island from dredging by occupying UAE forces.

The authority urged the UNESCO to fulfill their responsibilities to provide all protection in according to the international law to preserve the Island, which is one of the world historic places listed in the UNESCO list and a registered archipelago as a natural reserve on the list of the world’s vital marine sites in 2008.

The organization noted in a protest note for UNESCO that since the arrival of the UAE forces to Socotra, whose coasts and marine wealth are subjected to continuous dredging and smuggling of birds and rare plants, which are among the richest plants in the world.

It explained that what the forces of the United Arab Emirates tampering with the territory of the archipelago through the construction does not take into consideration the privacy of the island and its potential investment, by which is characterized, so this issue threatens the imbalance in the outstanding vital area which the island has been maintained for millions of years.

The Commission also called upon UNESCO to fulfill its responsibilities under the laws, regulations and executive mechanisms of the Organization to protect this world heritage from loss.
