A senior member of the Saudi-backed insurgency in Yemen has been killed in a car bomb.
Mohammed al Shawish was reportedly the Chief of Staff of the so-called 203rd Brigade - a Saudi-backed militant group staffed by mercenaries.
The Yemen News Agency (SABA) reported that Al Shawish was killed in Marib’s Sahn al Jen camp after an explosive device blew up his vehicle. Citing a security official SABA reported that three of Shawish’s bodyguards were also killed in the blast.
It is unclear who may have been behind the attack. But recent weeks have witnessed a spike in assassinations of Saudi-backed militant leaders in Yemen.
On Wednesday, in the Yemeni city of Taiz unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle shot and killed Marwan al-Shamiri – another militant leader in the so-called Western Front group.
According to local sources the spate of killings is essentially a turf war between groups loyal to different members of the Saudi-led coalition, namely the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.
The militants have also failed in their attempts to dislodge the Houthi Ansarullah movement from strategic locations across the country, further fueling internal divisions.
