A number of Yemeni officials, including the country’s Foreign and oil ministers met with United Nations Resident Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs in Yemen Jamie McGoldrick.

Both the country’s top diplomat Hisham Sharaf and the Oil and Minerals Minister Dhiab Mohsen bin Me'ili warned of the potential consequences if the Saudis attempted to capture the Yemeni port of Hodeida.

The meetings come amid speculation that the Saudi-led alliance bombing Yemen since 2015 is gearing up to launch a major operation in a bid to take the port from the Houthis.

Hisham Sharaf pointed out that 70% of the country’s humanitarian needs are provided through the port, stressing the need to keep the port safe and secure.

For his part McGoldrick agreed that maintaining the security of the port was of the utmost importance. According to the UN official Hodeida is a key lifeline for the Yemeni people and no safe alternative routes exist.
