The Yemeni army backed by the popular committees and the Houthi Ansarullah movement blocked Saudi-backed militias’ advances in Al Bayda province, informed military sources said on Wednesday.
"The Saudi-hired mercenaries were trying to penetrate into several strategic regions in al-Bayda province, but the Yemeni forces prevented them from paving their way," the Arabic-language Sabanet news agency quoted an unnamed military source.
The source reiterated that the Yemeni army killed and wounded tens of mercenaries in Zi Naem region of Al Bayda province.
Earlier on Wednesday, other military sources disclosed that scores of Saudi-backed militias were killed and tens of others, including a senior commander, were injured in tough battle with the Yemeni army and popular forces in the city of Sana'a.
"At least 35 Saudi-backed militias were killed and 68 others, including Commander of the Brigade 310 Mohammad al-Soudi al-Moin, were injured in fierce clashes with the Yemeni forces in the Ninth district of Sana'a city," the Arabic-language media quoted an unnamed military source as saying.
The source noted that the Riyadh-backed militias intended to penetrate into Ya'am Mountains in Sana'a's Ninth District.
"The enemy was surprised with the Yemeni forces' special operations in Bab al-Mandab region," he added.
Saudi Arabia began its deadly campaign against Yemen in late March 2015. The strikes were meant to undermine the Houthi Ansarullah movement and restore power to fugitive former president Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi.
About 11,403 people have been killed and over 19,343 injured since Riyadh launched the airstrikes. The Saudi aggression has also taken a heavy toll on Yemen’s facilities and infrastructure.
Yemeni forces have been engaged in retaliatory attacks against the Saudi forces deployed in the country as well as targets inside Saudi Arabia.
