The European Commission - Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (ECHO) presented 2.3 million euro (about $ 2.5 million) in aid to support air and sea transport services run by the World Food Program (WFP) in Yemen.
A press statement issued by the World Food Program stated that the program has activated UN humanitarian air services (UNHAS) in May 2015 to be capable of providing safe air transport for humanitarian workers and to facilitate humanitarian shipment and response to the crisis in Yemen.
In this context, WFP Country Director in Yemen, Torben Due, said that UE contribution will enable WFP to face one of the most important challenges that hinders the appropriate response to meet the needs of millions of Yemenis.
"It is estimated that more than 80 per cent of the population in Yemen is in need of humanitarian relief, and logistical support provided by the WFP is essential to support other humanitarian organizations working in the country," Due added.
Saudi Arabia began its deadly campaign against Yemen in late March 2015. The strikes were meant to undermine the Houthi Ansarullah movement and restore power to fugitive former president Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi.
About 10,000 people have been killed and over 16,000 injured since Riyadh launched the airstrikes. The Saudi aggression has also taken a heavy toll on Yemen’s facilities and infrastructure.
