The Yemeni army and popular forces have killed Saudi-paid al-Qaida commander in a unique military operation deep in the Saudi region of Najran, a military official said on Tuesday.

"Adnan al-Karawi, the well-known Al-Qaida terrorist commander from the southern port city of Aden, was killed in the hands of the army and popular forces when he along with other mercenaries attempted to advance from Najran towards al-Buqa crossing point," the official stated.

The operation took place overnight.

Al-Karawi, as well as a group of fighters affiliated with the Al Qaida branch in the south, had been hired by the Saudi-led military coalition to fight in support of its troops in several battlefronts.
