Yemen Peace Talks On Pause Mode for a Month

Peace talks held by UN in Kuwait to bring an end to the war in Yemen have been stalled for a period of one month.

UN envoy to Yemen, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, said the consultations held in Kuwait had cleared the way for a deal "which we hope to see soon."

That the talks saw contending parties sitting together at the negotiating table was "an accomplishment in itself," said Ahmed explaining that the major obstacle to the talks was the lack of confidence among the Yemeni parties.

As parties leave for their countries after the 90-day negotiations, efforts are still on to keep the talks on track the UN representative said.

The talks held in Kuwait were aimed at brokering peace between warring parties led by the Houthi Ansarullah movement and Yemen’s former president Ali Abdullah Saleh’s party, General People’s Congress (GPC), and the regime of fugitive President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi and local tribes.

Yemen has been under brutal aggression by Saudi-led coalition since March 26.

Thousands have been killed and injured in the attack, with the vast majority of them are civilians.

Riyadh launched the offensive on Yemen in a bid to allegedly restore power to fugitive president Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi who is a close ally to Saudi Arabia.
