Yemeni Peace Talks in Kuwait to Be Extended for Another Week

Negotiations on a peaceful settlement to the conflict in Yemen, currently underway in Kuwait, will be extended for another week, a source at the talks told Sputnik on Tuesday.

The source noted that the sides had recently made certain progress, which provoked the extension of the negotiations.

The UN-brokered talks to end the Yemeni conflict started in Kuwait on April 21. On July 20, the Kuwaiti government gave the warring sides 15 days to settle the crisis before it would stop hosting the talks.

Since 2014, Yemen has been engulfed in a military conflict between the Saudi-backed regime headed by fugitive President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi and the Houthi Ansrullah revolutionaries, the country’s main opposition force, who are supported by army units loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Saudi Arabia began its deadly campaign against Yemen in late March 2015. The strikes were meant to undermine the Houthi Ansarullah movement and restore power to fugitive former president Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

About 10,000 people have been killed and over 16,000 injured since Riyadh launched the airstrikes. The Saudi aggression has also taken a heavy toll on Yemen’s facilities and infrastructure.
