UN Envoy for Yemen Decries Delay in Peace Deal

The U.N. special envoy for Yemen said Tuesday that every day a peace agreement is put off "needlessly extends the country’s agony."

Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed spoke to the Security Council from Kuwait, where he has been mediating peace talks between the Houthi Ansarullah movement and the exiled Yemeni regime.

Ahmed said he had given both sides a road map for a peace deal that included a Houthi withdrawal and disarmament and the formation of a unity government.

He said that while both sides had reacted positively to the road map, they had not been able to agree on a timetable, especially the key issue of when a new government would be formed.

An April truce in Yemen has generally held, despite what U.N. officials say have been serious violations, including airstrikes against the Yemeni province of Lahij that killed 15 civilians and injured many others on Tuesday.

Yemen has been under military attacks by Saudi Arabia since late March last year. The Saudi military strikes were launched in a failed effort to undermine the popular Houthi Ansarullah movement and bring the former fugitive president back to power.

More than 9,400 people, among them 2,236 children, have been killed and 16,015 others injured since the start of the aggression. The strikes have also taken a heavy toll on the impoverished country’s facilities and infrastructure, destroying many hospitals, schools, and factories.
