UN Special Envoy hopeful of Yemen ceasefire agreement

The UN Special Envoy for Yemen Martin Griffiths said talks with warring Yemeni parties could be completed soon.

“‘I hope that these consultations can be soon completed and deliver what Yemenis expect, demand and deserve” stressed Griffiths on Thursday.

A statement by the envoy's office said it was “discussing concrete steps with the parties and remains in regular contact with them” to bring about agreements on a nationwide ceasefire, and on humanitarian and economic measures to ease the suffering of Yemenis.

Griffiths is conducting daily consultations “with the aim of convening virtually the parties together soonest possible,” the statement said.

It also called for a resumption of the political process to end the war as well as avert and mitigate a COVID-19 outbreak.

Yemen has so far not recorded any case of COVID-19, but aid groups are concerned that when or if it does hit, the impact will be catastrophic for a country already facing what the U.N. calls the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
