The United Nations [UN] envoy to Yemen, Ismail Ould Sheikh Ahmed, affirmed the importance of a final ceasefire in Yemen.

In an interview with the Russia Today [RT] television channel, Ould Sheikh said that, "It is the time for a final ceasefire as the first truce did not succeed and the Yemeni people need a lasting ceasefire to get rid of the sufferings and the humanitarian crisis".

It is now more than six months into the war in Yemen which was the second country in the world in terms of children’s famine, the UN envoy said, pointing out that, "There were 7 million Yemenis before the war who needed assistance and now situations have become worse that 21 million Yemenis are in need of aid".

Ould Sheikh said that Ansarullah are ready to provide concessions, noting that they affirmed readiness to stick to the Resolution No. 2016 and the return of the government.

Since March 26, a Saudi-led coalition backed by the United States has been carrying out a military aggression on Yemen by launching airstrikes against the country. The airstrikes have not been authorized by the United Nations [UN].

The ’civilian’ death toll in Yemen has risen to more than 2,300 with more than 4,000 other civilians wounded in the fighting in the country that has raged for more than a year now, according to the UN recently this month [September]. Yet, other organizations put the death toll at much higher.

The US-led Saudi aggression began in a bid to undermine the Houthi Ansarullah movement and restore power to the country’s fugitive former Yemeni president, Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Saudi Arabia.
