At least 125 people have died as a result of a cholera outbreak which left over 4,000 other people infected in Yemen this year, the country’s Saba news agency reported, citing Mathar Abbas Mirwani, the head of the local healthcare department, on Saturday.

The official told the outlet that the hospitals, which specialized in treating cholera, had received over 15,200 people suspected of having contracted the disease since the beginning of 2019.

Mirwani added that over 20 hospitals and clinics had arranged departments for receiving suspected cholera patients.

Cholera hit Yemen in the wake of a military conflict between the Houthis and the resigned regime which has been ongoing since 2015. The conflict led to an acute humanitarian crisis due to famine and poor hygiene conditions. The situation claimed lives of thousands of people.
