A spokesman of the Houthi Ansarullah movement Mohammed Abdel Salam said on Thursday that he had sent an invitation to the European Union and members of the European Parliament to visit Sana’a and familiarize themselves with the situation in Yemen.

"We made an invitation on behalf of the Supreme Political Council and the National Salvation Government to the European Union and the members of the European Parliament to visit Sana’a and to get a closer look at the various details that we mentioned, and other issues that they want to see and everything related to humanitarian, economic, political and social situation, and learn about the real situation in Yemen," Abdel Salam said in a statement on Facebook.

Yemen has been engulfed in a violent conflict between the resigned regime headed by former President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi and the Houthi movement.

The Saudi-led coalition has been carrying out airstrikes against the Houthis at Hadi's request since March 2015.

The intense fighting between the two sides resulted in one of the world's most acute humanitarian crises, with about 22 million people in Yemen currently in need of some form of humanitarian assistance or protection, according to UN figures.

In December, during the first round of UN-led consultations in Sweden, the warring parties to the Yemeni conflict agreed to a ceasefire in the port city of Hodeida, as well as an exchange of prisoners and establishment of humanitarian corridors in the area.
