President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Peter Maurer on Saturday said the lists of prisoners provided by both parties in the Yemen conflict included some 16,000 names, but the committee has only verified 2,000 names.

On the sidelines of the World Economic Forum “Davos 2019”, Maurer announced that the ICRC has completed its logistical preparations for the exchange of detainees in Yemen between Sanaa and the exiled Hadi regime backed by Riyadh.

In a statement to Al-Jazeera, he added that the committee obtained obligations to investigate the fate of the missing persons from both parties.

Maurer pointed out that the humanitarian situation in Yemen is still unstable, and that it is difficult to deliver humanitarian aid to those in need due to continued fighting in different areas.

The Saudi-led war has so far claimed the lives of about 56,000 Yemenis.

The Saudi-led war has also taken a heavy toll on the country’s infrastructure, destroying hospitals, schools, and factories. The UN has already said that a record 22.2 million Yemenis are in dire need of food, including 8.4 million threatened by severe hunger.

According to the world body, Yemen is suffering from the most severe famine in more than 100 years.

A number of Western countries, the United States and Britain in particular, are also accused of being complicit in the ongoing aggression as they supply Riyadh with advanced weapons and military equipment as well as logistical and intelligence assistance.
