Children’s Education: Another Major Casualty of the Yemen War

A teacher in Yemen’s southern province of Taiz turned his own house into a public school to give 700 students a chance to continue learning.

Founder of the Mona Relief Yemen Charity, Fatik Al-Rodaini, shared images showing hundreds of boys and girls attending the makeshift school.

This as Children’s education in Yemen continues to be threatened by the Saudi-led war which is preventing two million kids from attending school this school year.

Nearly four million primary school children soon may not be able to get an education because of a severe shortage of teachers, the U.N. children's fund (UNICEF) warned.

According to UNICEF, the education sector is on the brink of collapse because of conflict, political divisions and chronic underdevelopment.

Yemen also suffers from a shortage of learning facilities. The agency reports more than 2,500 schools have been damaged or destroyed by the war. Many schools also are being used as shelters for displaced people and some have been taken over by armed groups.

The Saudi-led coalition, which groups a number of Arab states including Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, launched its military campaign against Yemen in March 2015.

The conflict has since killed tens of thousands and left Yemen facing the worst humanitarian crisis in generations.
