The Malaysian Relief Agency (MRA), together with the Charitable Society for Social Welfare (CSSW) – a Yemen-based non-governmental organization – have organized a special medical screening program for heart patients at Ateq Hospital in Shabwah, which has recorded a high number of patients with heart-related issues.

Towards the end of 2017, WHO (World Health Organization) reported that 274 hospitals in Yemen were destroyed and damaged, caused by the war and this made it very difficult for the residents to get access for a good medical treatment.

MRA president Dr Mohd Daud Sulaiman said he was informed that the residents in the region of Shabwah needed to travel a long way in order for them to get a proper heart-screening test.

The program is also important as most hospitals in Yemen are currently in a state of emergency and in need of more medical experts that come from various medical backgrounds.

“I was informed that patients with heart problems in Shabwah could only receive special heart examinations, located outside the region such as in Aden and Mukalla.

“These places located as far as 450 kilometres from Shabwah,” said Dr Mohd Daud who is also a consultant cardiologist at KPJ Damansara Specialist Hospital.

Under the same mission, 8,000 residents of the Souq Al-Qadeem district of Shabwah will benefit from a solar-powered water pump installed in the war-ravaged nation. This project was derived the success of the solar-powered water pump previously installed in Golah.

“I personally believe the project is able to provide them some help and could benefit them in various ways,” Daud said.
