The Yemeni army said the ballistic missile that hit the Saudi capital Riyadh was a locally developed Scud-type missile, Burkan 2 (Volcano 2).

The army said in a statement received by the official news agency Saba late on Monday that the long-range Burkan 2 was locally modified from Burkan 1 by national military experts at the Developing and Research Center of the army's Rocketry Forces.

On Sunday, Yemen's local media reported a ballistic missile attack on Saudi Arabia’s capital Riyadh.

The rocketry force claimed that the missile had been launched at a Saudi military base located to the west of the capital in retaliation for the kingdom’s relentless war against their country.

Saudi officials have not made any comments on the reports yet, but locals have said on Twitter that the missile struck a military camp to the west of al-Mazahimiyah town near Riyadh.

The move comes as a part of defending Yemen against the continued Saudi aggression which has been committing massacres and blockading the Arab impoverished country, according to the statement.

The regime in Riyadh has been incessantly pounding Yemen since March 2015 in a bid to reinstall the country’s ex-government and crush the Houthi Ansarullah movement.

The military aggression has claimed the lives of over 11,400 Yemenis, including women and children, according to the latest tally by a Yemeni monitoring group.
