Johnson’s ’Profound Concern’ Does Little for the People of Yemen

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson on Friday expressed "profound concern" about the suffering of the Yemeni people after 20 months of war.

"But I must share my profound concern about the present suffering of the people of Yemen," Johnson said in a speech at the Manama Dialogue on Middle East security in Bahrain.

But the foreign secretary’s concern does little for the Yemeni people especially since his government provides the Saudis with the bulk of the weapons used to kill civilians in Yemen.

The UK government has refused to stop arms sales to Saudi Arabia, rejecting calls by two parliamentary committees and human rights groups to cease its multibillion-dollar military exports, which critics claim are fuelling the war in Yemen.

Saudi Arabia launched a military campaign against Yemen in March 2015 to restore ousted President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi to power. The Saudi aggression has claimed the lives of at least 10,000 people, including almost 4,000 civilians, according to UN data. But other estimates put the number of killed much higher.
