The Norwegian Refugee Council warned on Monday of devastating consequences when the coronavirus hits overcrowded settlements in places like Yemen, urging world leaders to act now.
“There will also be carnage when the virus reaches parts of Syria, Yemen and Venezuela where hospitals have been demolished and health systems have collapsed,” NRC’s Secretary General Jan Egeland said in a statement.
“Coronavirus doesn’t discriminate or play politics, and neither should the world when it comes to supporting those most at risk of contracting the illness,” Egeland stressed. “We must stay and deliver and not turn our backs on people living in countries that need the most support during these extraordinarily challenging times.”
Last week, the World Health Organization declared the worldwide outbreak of the new coronavirus a pandemic, with more than 118,000 cases in 114 countries and 4,291 deaths.
