The president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Peter Maurer, has arrived in Sana’a on Wednesday from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

A Yemeni political source in Sana’a told Sputnik News that the chairman of the Red Cross will during his visit meet with the head of the Supreme Political Council, Mahdi Al-Mashat, Prime Minister Abdul Aziz bin Habtoor and other Yemeni leaders, in order to discuss the implementation of the prisoner exchange agreement signed in Stockholm.

The article added that Maurer’s visit will address the commission’s humanitarian assistance in the areas of health, water and relief, and its plans for the next phase.

Maurer’s visit follows a meeting in Riyadh on Tuesday with the foreign minister of the Saudi-backed government in exile, Mohammed al-Hadrami.

On September 30, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) announced that it had overseen the release of 290 detainees in a unilateral Yemeni release operation, including 42 who survived an airstrike by coalition, which targeted a detention area in Dhamar province.

The ICRC expressed its readiness to act as a neutral facilitator in the release of detainees.

Last December, as part of the Stockholm round of negotiations, the two sides exchanged lists of some 15,000 prisoners of war on both sides as part of a mechanism to activate the prisoner exchange agreement, but its implementation remains stalled.
