British Government Applies For Stay Of Court Ruling That Declared Saudi Arms Sales Unlawful

The British government is attempting a legal maneuver that would permit the continuation of arms sales to the Saudi-led coalition bombing Yemen.

Government ministers applied for a stay of last month ruling by Britain’s Court of Appeal, which declared that the process by which the UK sold arms to Saudi Arabia was unlawful.

The landmark court ruling was the result of a legal challenge by the Campaign Against Arms Trade (CAAT), which accused the UK of breaching international humanitarian law.

CAAT’s Andrew Smith warned on Monday that “if a stay is granted then it will result in more unlawful arms sales and more atrocities.”

Riyadh’s coalition, which has been bombing Yemen since March 2015, groups Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Egypt.

The military campaign has killed tens of thousands of people while many more have died as a result of starvation and disease.

The UK has licensed at least £4.7 billion worth of arms to Saudi Arabia since the start of the conflict.
