The Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Yemen Martin Griffiths met with Russian Foreign minister Sergei Lavrov on Monday.
"I had a productive meeting with Foreign Minister Lavrov today in Moscow,” Griffiths said on his twitter page. “I am grateful for the continued support from Russia for my efforts and I welcome Russia's constructive engagement in our endeavors to achieve peace in Yemen."
The one-day visit is part of a tour aimed at reviving political efforts to resolve the Yemeni crisis.
A UN official described Griffiths visit to Moscow as “important” given that Russia is a major partner and a permanent member of the Security Council.
After Russia, the envoy will visit the UAE and Oman. Observers believe that his visit to Oman is an indication of planned talks with some Houthi officials such as the group's spokesman Mohamed Abdel Salam.
