24 NGOs Call On Germany To Extend Its Moratorium On Arms Sales To Saudi Arabia

More than two dozen Yemeni and global NGOs on Tuesday called on Germany to “renew the suspension of export licenses for arms transfers to Saudi Arabia for use in the conflict in Yemen.”

The group of 24 non-governmental organizations sent a joint letter addressed to German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

“Ending arms exports to all parties to the conflict in Yemen is the only position that is in line with the agreed upon European and international obligations, including the ATT and Common Position, and international humanitarian law and international human rights law,” the letter read.

“We hope that Germany will continue to take a principled position and one that aligns with your legal obligations, including under German domestic law prohibiting the export of arms, including spare parts and components, where there is a major risk they will be used to commit or facilitate violations of international humanitarian and human rights law,” the organizations pleaded. “The coalition's conduct of war in Yemen since 2015 has made these risks clear.”

The group of 24 Yemeni and global NGOs include the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), CARE and Mwatana for Human Rights.
