UK’s Hunt Warns That Yemen Conflict Could Result In A Disaster If Neither Side Allows Access To Aid

The UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt warned Sunday that a full-blown humanitarian crisis in Yemen could develop if neither side opens up access to aid.

“It is vital that we do not forget there is a disaster about to unfold on our doorstep if we do not follow the path for peace that was agreed in Sycokholm,” Hunt said in an interview with itv news.

The comments were made during his visit to the Yemeni city of Aden, the headquarters of the resigned regime of former president Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

The British official stressed that the Stockholm agreement is “the only path to peace”, warning that it “could be dead in a matter of weeks if we don’t see real progress in clearing the port of Hodeida from troops.”

On December 13, 2018, representatives of the Hadi regime and Yemen’s popular Houthi Ansarallah movement reached agreements that include a ceasefire in southwestern Hodeida province and entry into the seaway of humanitarian aid for the Yemeni population. The Riyadh-led coalition has repeatedly violated the agreements in question by bombarding Ansarallah’s positions.
Hunt, the first Western foreign minister to visit Yemen since the beginning of the crisis in the country, also warned that the agreement is “the last chance for peace.”

The United Kingdom is one of the main allies in the Saudi-led military coalition. It provides it with weapons and ammunition used in the strikes against Yemen.

Despite protests from human rights groups and the international community against the Yemen aggression, London still refuses to suspend arms sales to Saudi Arabia, valued at £ 1.1 billion in 2017.
