A leading Iranian journalist said Saudi Arabia has asked Iran to pave the way for Riyadh’s honorable exit from Yemen, which has been the target of Saudi air raids since 2015.
In a recent speech, Hossein Shariatmadari, the editor-in-chief of the Iranian daily Kayhan, claimed the Saudis have asked Tehran to help them end the Yemen crisis without losing face further.
“Since the beginning of the war in Yemen, the Saudis have done nothing, but brutally massacring Yemeni civilians,” he was quoted as saying by IRNA.
Back in 2015, Saudi Arabia announced it would seize control of Yemen in just three days. Four years into the conflict, the Saudis are yet to accomplish any of their stated objectives.
The Saudi-led military campaign against Yemen has so far killed hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians, displaced millions and destroyed the country’s infrastructure.
The war also caused what the UN described as the worst humanitarian catastrophe the world has ever seen.
