The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) is constructing eco-shelters in Yemen’s northwestern province of Hajjah to house displaced people.
The northwestern costal governorate is home to around a fifth of all displaced Yeminis, with most originating from other areas within the governorate.
These eco-huts are built with the help of displaced Yemenis “using locally available materials”, the agency said on its Twitter page on Wednesday.
The shelters, also designed to adapt to the high temperatures of the coastal plain, “is part of our ongoing efforts to improve living conditions on sites hosting displaced people,” UNHCR added.
Hajjah has the highest percentage of displaced families living in pre-existing urban and rural settlements, creating a need for additional shelters.
Saudi Arabia is spearheading a coalition of Arab states that is bombing Yemen to forcefully reinstate the resigned regime of former Yemeni President Abd Rabbu Mnasour Hadi. The Saudi-led military campaign has killed thousands of people and wounded hundreds of thousands more.
The Saudi-led war has also displaced millions of Yemenis, destroyed the infrastructure, pushed the country into the brink of famine and caused the world's worst humanitarian catastrophe.
