HRW’s Charbonneau: Some UNSC Members Still Shield Saudi-led Coalition, Sell Weapons To Riyadh

Human Rights Watch (HRW) blasted some permanent members of the UN Security Council over their support for the Saudi-led coalition bombing Yemen.

“Some permanent UNSC members still inexcusably shield coalition from scrutiny and sell Saudi weapons,” the group’s UN Director Louis Charbonneau wrote in a Twitter post on Wednesday.

Charbonneau also called on the UNSC to “warring parties in #Yemen to keep pledges made in Sweden” last month.

He also noted that the “countdown for prisoner swap is approaching, but parties have missed deadlines, putting it in jeopardy.”

In December, Yemen’s warring parties swapped the names of 15,000 prisoners they want released from detention. The operation is expected to be implemented by the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Saudi Arabia and its regional allies, including the UAE, launched the devastating military campaign against Yemen to bring the Riyadh-backed former regime back to power.
