Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin and UN Special Envoy for Yemen Martin Griffiths have discussed the situation in Yemen as well as the agreements reached at intra-Yemeni consultations in Sweden last month, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Friday.

Vershinin and Griffiths met earlier in the day, according to the ministry.

"During the meeting, the sides discussed military, political and humanitarian situation in Yemen focusing on perspectives for implementation of agreements reached at the UN-led intra-Yemeni consultations that were held in Sweden on December 6-13," the ministry said in a statement.

Russia also reiterated its support for Griffiths' efforts aimed at stopping violence and bloodshed, and reaching a long-term settlement in Yemen, the statement added.

On Thursday, Griffiths called on all parties in Yemen to refrain from further escalating the alarming level of violence.

The UN-led consultations on the Yemeni peace process held in Sweden last month resulted in an agreement on various humanitarian measures, including a proposal for the exchange of prisoners, a ceasefire in the Yemeni port city of Hodeida, and the establishment of humanitarian corridors in the area.
