IRC: First UN Security Council Resolution On Yemen ‘Long Overdue Step Toward Ending War’

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) welcomed the adopting of the first UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution on Yemen in four years.

“At last, the Council has taken a much needed step to respond to the urgency of the humanitarian disaster as well as the international community’s growing outrage and desire to put an end to the brutal war in Yemen,” IRC’s Yemen Country Director Frank Mc Manus said on Friday.

Mc Manus stressed on the importance of implementing the agreements reached in Sweden and are “effective immediately”. He also urged all parties to the conflict to commit to further talks slated for January.

“It is critical that the warring parties and the international community do not lose focus. Regional actors have a critical role to play in resolving this crisis and must now refrain from any actions that may undermine the fragile progress made. Maintaining their support and engagement should now be the priority of their international partners,” IRC’s Yemen Country Director said. “The agreements codified in this resolution are only the first steps on a long road to a peaceful and stable Yemen. Now, words must be translated into actions.”

A ceasefire in Hodeida, between Saudi-backed resigned regime forces and Yemen’s popular Houthi revolutionaries, is seen as the first significant breakthrough in peace efforts since the war erupted in 2014.

The agreement was brokered at talks in Rimbo, some 60km north of the Swedish capital Stockholm, where a number of other confidence-building steps were agreed to boost confidence between the warring sides.
