The Permanent Representative of Russia to the United Nations, Gennady Gatilov, said that it is very important, at this time to secure the work of the port of Hodeida in a sustainable manner to deliver assistance to Yemenis affected by the war.

“At the moment, it is very important to secure the work of the port of Hodeida, which is the only point through which aid can be delivered to the Yemenis,” Gennady Gatilov said in an interview with Sputnik on Thursday.

Gatilov stressed that Russia maintains contacts with all the Yemeni parties and supports the efforts of the UN special envoy for Yemen, Martin Griffiths.

Russia is starting that Yemen’s fate must be determined by the Yemenis themselves, and the international community should provide assistance to the Yemeni people, he added.

He also stressed Russia’s insistence to provide humanitarian aid to Yemen.

Saudi Arabia and a number of its regional allies launched a devastating military campaign against Yemen in March 2015, with the aim of bringing the resigned regime of Hadi back to power and crushing the country’s popular Houthi Ansarullah movement.
