US Officials Demand End To American Complicity in Yemen's Humanitarian Disaster

US senator from Massachusetts Elizabeth Warren and US representative from California Ro Khanna called for an end to American support for the Saudi-led war on Yemen.

“We can no longer turn a blind eye to the actions of the Saudi coalition -- or our own role in the suffering of the Yemeni people,” the two officials wrote in an article published by CNN.

The United States has been quietly providing intelligence and military advice to the Saudi-led coalition and refueling Saudi coalition warplanes in midair.

The US government has also been providing advice and assistance as well as authorizing the sale of US-made bombs and missiles the coalition uses to conduct the Yemen war.

“As the attacks on schools and hospitals in Yemen continue, so does our military support for the Saudi regime which has no respect for human rights. We have to put an end to these atrocities,” Khanna wrote in a Twitter post.

Warren and Khanna urged support for UN Special Envoy Martin Griffiths' peace negotiations.

“Congress has an urgent responsibility to act,” wrote both US officials. “We can hold the Saudi coalition accountable.”

The Saudi-led coalition, which groups a number of Arab states including Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, launched its military campaign against Yemen in March 2015.

The conflict has since killed tens of thousands and left Yemen facing the worst humanitarian crisis in generations.
