Report: Saudis Purchase Israel’s Iron Dome Missile Defense Systems

The Saudis have reportedly purchased Israel’s missile defense Iron Dome systems for “tens of millions of dollars”.

According to the London-based Al-Khaleej Online, which cited high-level diplomatic sources, the deal was brokered by the Americans.

“Saudi Arabia will pay for the completion of the Iron Dome deal in excess of tens of millions of dollars, and there are pledges to be signed through the US mediator that this system does not pose any danger to the security of Israel and its allies in the region in the near or long term,” the site quoted the sources as saying.

This pricy Israeli-made air defense system is apparently meant to help the Saudis cope with a growing number of Yemeni missiles being lobbed across the kingdom’s southern border.

“If the Iron Dome succeeds in intercepting rockets that pose a threat to the kingdom, there will be talks with Israel to buy additional military systems and open the door for military exchanges between the two sides,” the diplomatic sources added.

Although the Israelis have denied the purported transaction, the Saudis have remained mum.
