Fears Of New Cholera Outbreak In Yemen

The continuing war in the poorest Arab country has left the city of Hodeidah at risk of an "unstoppable epidemic".

Violence is escalating in Yemen, raising fears of a new cholera outbreak in the port city of Hodeidah.

Saudi-led coalition jets have launched fresh airstrikes on the city, which is held by Yemen’s Houthi Ansarullah movement.

The United Nations says the city could be "one airstrike away from an unstoppable epidemic" of the disease, which has already hit other parts of the country because of damage to water purification facilities.

The UN office in Yemen says "air strikes are putting innocent civilians at extreme risk".

The conflict is also jeopardising the supply of desperately-needed food and medicine.

Hodeidah is a vital route for food and medical supplies into the desperately poor and war-torn country.

The upsurge in fighting is causing mounting alarm among aid agencies.

The World Food Programme warned up to 1.1m people are at risk of being displaced or trapped in Hodeidah city and outlying districts and needing of emergency food assistance.
