Sanaa Government Mulling Possible Handover of Hodeidah Port To The UN

The UN Yemen mediator Martin Griffiths is reportedly in talks with the government in Sanaa over the possible handover of the Hodeidah port.

Yemen’s Houthi Ansarullah, which controls Hodeidah, is looking to prevent a humanitarian disaster by allowing the UN to take control of the port and avert an attack from the Saudi-led coalition.

According to Reuters, a source close to the Houthi movement confirmed that the proposal was being discussed. Griffiths arrived in Sanaa on Saturday.

International aid agencies have warned that a major battle for Hodeidah, with a 400,000 population, could lead to a bloodbath and shut down a port that handles most of Yemen’s commercial imports and critically-needed aid supplies.
