The President of Yemen’s Supreme Revolutionary Committee, Mohammad Ali Al-Houthi, welcomed the change of the UN special envoy Ismail Ould Cheikh.

“It is positive that the United Nations has met the demands of the Yemeni people, who rejected the envoy Ismail Ould Cheikh and it has chosen another,” the official said in a tweet on Monday evening.

Al-Houthi asked the UN to choose An envoy who respects the Yemeni people’s demands and is not on the payroll of Saudi Arabia.

He voiced hope that the new UN envoy speed up the peace process successfully and put an end to the Saudi aggression.

In the meantime, the head of Yemen’s Supreme Political Council (SPC), Saleh Al Sammad, also welcomed the decision via a message on his twitter account.

“The resignation of Ould Cheikh is a clear message to all political parties inside Yemen and outside it,” he said, noting that the country is facing a very serious plot.

He added, “We thank Ould Cheikh for his resignation” just like the former UN envoy to Yemen Jamal Bin Omar.

Sammad urged Ould Cheikh to hold a press conference to state the reasons for his resignation.

Sources in New York revealed that the UN has appointed senior international mediator Martin Griffiths as the new envoy to Yemen.

Ould Cheikh Ahmed will step down when his current contract finishes at the end of February after nearly three years in the job.
