Eleven Saudi Royals Jailed Over Rare Protest

Eleven Saudi princes have been detained following a rare protest at a royal palace in Riyadh.

The 11 were reportedly demanding compensation for a death sentence issued against a relative and the cancellation of a royal decree that halted state payments of water and electricity bills for Saudi royals.

Gripped by an economic crisis stemming largely from the collapse of oil prices, Riyadh has been forced to cut subsidies and introduce the value added tax (VAT).

According to unconfirmed reports, the 11 royals have been jailed and will face a trial over the protest.

In November of last year, dozens of Saudi royals were rounded up in what is largely seen as an attempt by Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman to consolidate power.

Some have since been released after reportedly paying billions of dollars in exchange for their freedom.
