The Humanitarian Coordinator for Yemen, Jamie McGoldrick, expressed deep concern regarding the civilian casualties caused by the recent escalation in violence in Yemen.

In a statement issued on Thursday, McGoldrick accused the Saudi-led coalition of “complete disregard for human life” following the latest airstrikes that claimed hundreds of civilian lives.

The UN official reminded “all parties to the conflict, including the Saudi-led Coalition, of their obligations under International Humanitarian Law to spare civilians and civilian infrastructure and to always distinguish between civilian and military objects.”

“As the conflict in which civilians have borne the brunt marks 1000 days, I once again remind all parties that it has no military solution. There can only be a political solution,” the statement read.

On 26 December, Saudi-led coalition airstrikes on a crowded popular market in Al Hayma sub-district in Attazziah district, Taizz Governorate resulted in at least 54 civilians killed, including eight children, and 32 others injured including six children. Another airstrike on a farm in Attohayta District, Hodeida Governorate resulted in the killing of 14 people from the same family. These victims are in addition to 84 civilian casualties reported in the last 10 days, including 41 people killed, and 43 people injured by airstrikes in several governorates throughout Yemen.

Saudi Arabia has been leading a destructive military campaign against Yemen since March 2015 to reinstate former president Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi and crush the Houthi movement.

The campaign has seriously damaged the country’s infrastructure. In its tallies released in February, Yemen’s Legal Center for Rights and Development said the Saudi war had killed over 12,000 civilians, including 2,568 kids.
