The European Union’s High Representative, Federica Mogherini, warned that the situation in Yemen “has exacerbated the already dire humanitarian situation.”
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Mogherini said “the Yemeni people are paying the highest price in this conflict, as evidenced by the reported killing of 136 civilians through bombings in the past ten days alone.”
“The European Union calls on all parties to choose the wiser path of de-escalation and genuinely engage in the efforts of the United Nations to resume a negotiated solution as a matter of urgency,” the statement read. “The European Union will give its support to any serious resumption of peace talks.”
Saudi Arabia has been leading a destructive military campaign against Yemen since March 2015 to reinstate former president Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi and crush the Houthi movement.
The campaign has seriously damaged the country’s infrastructure. In its tallies released in February, Yemen’s Legal Center for Rights and Development said the Saudi war had killed over 12,000 civilians, including 2,568 kids.
