UAE Announces Formation Of “Joint Cooperation Committee” With Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have formed a new military and trade partnership separate from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

In a statement on Tuesday, the UAE’s foreign ministry announced that the new “joint cooperation committee” would encompass “all military, political, economic, trade and cultural fields.”

The announcement comes as GCC member states convened for a summit in Kuwait – the first gathering of its kind since the Saudi-led blockade was imposed on Qatar.

Created in 1981, the GCC, which groups Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), is facing the most severe crisis in its history.

In June three of its members – Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the UAE – severed ties with Qatar, accusing Doha of financing terrorism.

It isn’t clear how the new committee formed by the UAE and Saudi Arabia will affect the GCC.
