'Elders' Call on Saudi Arabia, Allies to Lift Blockade of Yemen

An independent group of world leaders are calling on Saudi Arabia and its partners in a coalition fighting Shiite rebels in Yemen to lift their blockade of the war-ravaged nation to avert a humanitarian disaster.

In a Saturday statement, "The Elders" said the blockade was aggravating an already "dire" human situation in Yemen.

The statement echoed concerns by the United Nations and aid groups that the blockade could bring millions of people closer to "starvation and death."

The coalition tightened its already imposed blockade on Yemen after a retaliatory missile attack launched by the Houthi revolutionaries last weekend near the Saudi capital, Riyadh.

The Elders are a group of world figures who work for international peace. The group is chaired by former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Yemen has been under brutal aggression by Saudi-led coalition since March 26. Thousands have been killed and injured in the attack, with the vast majority of them are civilians.

Riyadh launched the offensive on Yemen in a bid to allegedly restore power to fugitive president Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi who is a close ally to Saudi Arabia.

However, Yemeni army, backed by the committees including the Houthi Ansarullah movement has been responding to the aggression by targeting several Saudi border military posts and clearing several areas across the country, especially the Yemen’s south, from Hadi and al-Qaeda-linked militias.
