“Yemeni families have been forced to live in caves, because of the escalating war in the country,” UN OCHA has warned.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Yemen said via its official Twitter account that more than ten per cent of Yemenis have been displaced as a result of the unrest in the country.
“Some families have been forced to live in caves or primitive dwellings due to the absence of basic shelter facilities,” it said.
OCHA said in a report on Wednesday that “78 per cent of Yemeni families live in a worst economic situation than they did two years ago.”
Yemen has been witnessing war between pro-Hadi forces and Houthi revolutionaries supported by forces loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh since 2014.
A coalition of Arab States led by Saudi Arabia have been carrying out airstrikes against Houthi and Saleh positions since March 2015 at the request of Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi to restore his control.
According to UN officials, more than 10,000 people have been killed in the war, while 700,000 have contracted cholera.
