EU Envoy In Yemen For Talks Over UN Plan To Run Key Port

The head of the European Union delegation to Yemen is visiting the country for talks with the Houthi Ansarullah movement over a U.N. plan regarding a disputed key port.

Houthi officials say Ambassador Antonia Calvo Puerta arrived in Sana’a on Sunday to discuss the U.N. proposal for Hodeida port to be run by a third neutral party under U.N. supervision.

The Red Sea port of Hodeida, currently under Houthi control, is a vital lifeline for most of the country’s population.

Yemeni officials in the internationally recognized regime of resigned President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi say they welcome the U.N. plan.

A Saudi-led coalition, backing Hadi’s regime and battling the Houthi revolutionaries, has long been trying to seize the port but have failed.

Yemen has been under military attacks by Saudi Arabia since late March last year. The Saudi military strikes were launched in a failed effort to undermine the popular Houthi Ansarullah movement and bring the former fugitive president back to power.

More than 12,000 people, among them 2,236 children, have been killed and 19,343 others injured since the start of the aggression. The strikes have also taken a heavy toll on the impoverished country’s facilities and infrastructure, destroying many hospitals, schools, and factories.
