The United Nations Security Council will hold a session on the situation in Yemen on Tuesday, during which the UN special envoy to Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed and the Head Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA ), Stephen O'Brien will brief the council on the latest developments in the war-torn country.
The session will also discuss Ould Cheikh's efforts over the past few weeks to bring the Yemeni parties back to the negotiating table, while O'Brien will highlight the humanitarian situation in Yemen, including outbreak of cholera.
Saudi Arabia began its deadly campaign against Yemen in late March 2015. The strikes were meant to undermine the Houthi Ansarullah movement and restore power to fugitive former president Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi.
About 12,000 people have been killed and over 19,343 injured since Riyadh launched the airstrikes. The Saudi aggression has also taken a heavy toll on Yemen’s facilities and infrastructure.
