The United Nations humanitarian coordinator in Yemen Jamie McGoldrick Friday has called on all conflicting parties in the country to halt the fighting as the Holy Month of Ramadan begins.
“As the holy month of Ramadan begins, I urge all the parties to the conflict to lay down their weapons and halt the fighting to bestow much needed peace and tranquility to the people of Yemen during this festive season,” McGoldrick said in a statement.
The UN official also expressed concern at the continued reports of fighting in Yemen’s Taiz province.
“The escalation of violence over the last four days has resulted in tens of war-wounded arriving at medical facilities and multiple deaths. Most people affected by the recent clashes are innocent civilians trying to go about their daily lives,” the statement read.
McGoldrick adds that “Approximately 70% of the war-wounded are women and children. They bear most of the consequences of the war and the continuing disregard for the protection of civilians.”
