Multiple U.S. troops were injured in a Tuesday raid against a compound associated with al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) in Yemen in which at least seven militants were reportedly killed.
According to the Pentagon spokesman, Captain Jeff Davis, the injuries were not serious enough to require medical evacuation. He declined to say specifically how many troops were injured.
Davis added that this was the first time the U.S. had carried out a ground raid in the Marib governorate and the deepest the U.S. had gone into Yemen to target AQAP.
The raid against the AQAP safehouse was the third such raid since a Jan. 28 operation that resulted in the death of Navy Seal William “Ryan” Owens. During that raid, a number of civilians were also killed and a V-22 Osprey was destroyed.
The U.S. has slowly stepped up its involvement in Yemen since President Donald Trump took office.
However, AQAP has not been the only target of U.S. efforts in the region. The U.S. has also provided material and logistics support to partner forces in the region, including Saudi Arabia, which has killed thousands since launching its military campaign in Yemen.
