UN Envoy for Yemen Hopes for Ceasefire before Ramadan Begins

UN envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed will head to Sana’a soon to meet with the Houthi Ansarullah movement and discuss the possibility of a ceasefire before the holy month of Ramadan begins as well as the possibility of resuming consultations next month between the warring parties in Kuwait or Geneva.

More than six attempts to clinch a ceasefire in Yemen have foundered, including a three-day October last year truce that fell apart as soon as it went into force to allow aid deliveries to millions homeless and hungry.

Saudi Arabia has been leading an offensive against Yemen since March 2015 in a bid to crush the Houthi Ansarullah. The war has left at least 12,000 civilians dead, according to a latest tally by a Yemeni monitoring group.

The US has also been providing logistic and surveillance support to the kingdom in the bloody military campaign.
