On Friday, Yemeni media reported that Yemen’s Army and popular committees including the Houthis Anssarullah movement targeted positions held by Sudanese troops in Taiz province.
Military sources told Yemeni state news agency (Saba) Saturday that the Yemeni army and popular committees launched a barrage of artillery shells on the gatherings of Sudanese soldiers at Nabizah mountain in northern part of Mawzaa district in Taiz province. According to the sources, a lot of soldiers were injured, while their commander was reportedly killed. Besides, an armored vehicle was destroyed.
In the meantime, Sudanese state news agency reported on Saturday that two Sudanese Army soldiers died while taking part in a Saudi-led military operation in Yemen. Clarifying the circumstances of their death, the agency added that they were carrying out operations in Yemen against the Houthis.
Spokesman for Sudanese Ministry of Defense, Brigadier General Ahmed Khalifa al-Shami, said Saturday that Sudan’s troops carried out a series of operations in Yemen on Friday and Saturday while also confirming two soldiers had been killed and several others injured.
Last April, Sudanese Army officials admitted five soldiers were killed and other 22 wounded in military operations in Yemen. Houthi-affiliated sources, in turn, said their forces managed to kill 50 and injure dozens of Sudanese soldiers as a result of successful ambush at Al Nar mountain which was a part of the battle of Mocha port city battle last month.
In January 2016, first Sudanese soldier was reported KIA in Aden, making it possible to assume that at least eight Sudanese military servicemen have been killed in Yemen since the beginning of Saudi-led war on this country.
Political analysts say Khartoum began admitting its military losses in Yemen only recently, trying to gain more money from Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, the North-African nation has been suffering heavy casualties in Yemen since the beginning of the war, experts insist.
Sudan is a member of Saudi-led Arab military coalition that supports Yemen’s former regime of fugitive president Abd-Rabbuh Mansour Hadi in more than two-year long war against Houthi movement and forces loyal to former Yemeni president Ali Abdullah Saleh.
The exact number of Sudanese soldiers fighting in Yemen is unknown. Neither is clear when these forces joined the battle of Taiz, as they are usually stationed in southern province of Aden.
