15 rights organizations sent a joint letter to the ambassador of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) urging action to protect Yemeni human rights advocates and civil society.

The groups including Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch (HRW), and Human Rights First raised concern about recent efforts by the regime of fugitive president Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi to silence renowned Yemeni human rights advocates and civil society leaders.

The joint letter read: “It is essential that all parties to the conflict in Yemen fulfill their obligations to respect the independence and rights of human rights defenders and civil society members.”

The signatories denounced the harassment and detention of human rights activists and defenders by the Hadi regime, adding that “An active civil society is fundamental if accountability is to replace impunity and such crimes are prevented from becoming further widespread and entrenched. Yemeni civil society produces valuable and independent knowledge about the current situation in Yemen, and work daily to improve conditions for Yemeni civilians.”

The groups called on the UNSC’S ambassador to support the efforts of the Yemeni human rights advocates to advance human rights in Yemen.
