Within the framework of international cooperation, Finland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has donated 30,000 Euros to the UN World Food Program (WFP) to help alleviate famine in Yemen.

“Yemen’s faced with the biggest humanitarian crisis in the world right now and the outlook for the country’s extremely worrying,” said Finnish Minister of Foreign Affairs Sven Mikser. “In a situation where two-thirds of the Yemeni population – 18.8 million people – are in need of humanitarian aid and seven million are at risk of starvation and need help, which is to say food, as soon as possible, we can’t just stand by and watch.”

Mikser emphasised the importance of focusing the international community’s attention on what is going on in Yemen at the moment and continuing to act together. The UN, in association with its partner humanitarian organizations, is increasing the amount of humanitarian aid being donated to Yemen so as to prevent widespread famine in the country.

The 30,000-euro contribution of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs accords with Objective II of the Strategy for Estonian Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid 2016-2020, which is to rescue and assist victims of catastrophes caused by natural events and human activities.
